Although his stint with the band would be short-lived, Iommi made an appearance with Jethro Tull on the The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV show. In December 1968, Iommi abruptly left Earth to join Jethro Tull. After shortening the name to Polka Tulk, the band changed their name to Earth, and continued as a four-piece without Phillips and Clarke.Įarth played club shows in England, Denmark, and Germany their set-list consisted of cover songs by Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer, and Cream, as well as lengthy improvised blues jams. The new group was initially named The Polka Tulk Blues Band (after a cheap brand of talcum powder Osbourne saw in his mother's bathroom) and also featured slide guitarist Jimmy Phillips and saxophonist Alan "Aker" Clarke. The two enlisted bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who had played together in a band called Rare Breed, Osbourne having placed an advertisement in a local music shop: "Ozzy Zig requires gig- has own PA". History Formation and early days (1968–1969)įollowing the breakup of their previous band Mythology in 1968, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward sought to form a heavy blues band in Aston, Birmingham. The early/mid 1980s line-up featuring Iommi, Butler, Dio, and Appice reformed in 2006 under the title, Heaven & Hell. The original lineup reunited with Osbourne in 1997 and released a live album, Reunion. In 1992, Iommi and Butler rejoined Dio and drummer Vinny Appice to record Dehumanizer. After a few albums with Dio's vocals and his songwriting collaborations, Black Sabbath endured a revolving lineup in the 1980s and 1990s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin. He was replaced by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne's drinking led to his firing from the band in 1979. Rolling Stone has posited the band as 'the heavy-metal kings of the '70s'. They have sold over 15 million records in the United States alone. They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time, and placed second in VH1 's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list, behind Led Zeppelin. Originally formed as a heavy blues-rock band named Earth, the band began incorporating occult- and horror-inspired lyrics with tuned-down guitars, changing their name to Black Sabbath and achieving multiple gold and platinum records in the 1970s.Īs one of the first and most influential heavy metal bands of all time, Black Sabbath helped define the genre with releases such as quadruple-platinum Paranoid, released in 1970. The band has since experienced multiple lineup changes, with a total of twenty-two former members. Remember, this site is NOT funded by Black Sabbath, it’s a fan endeavour, and your ordering the albums and songs through the links on my site help ensure the site will continue to exist going forward.JANIS JOPLIN, BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING CO. Please purchase these CD’s through the links on my site (or the sound samples links on the sides). These links almost all go to either (US) or .uk (UK).
I generally cover the most recent, and a few important releases from the past. However, with some of these albums being out for over 40 years now, I cannot link to every version there has ever been. I attempt to cover most releases of the albums where I can. You can also purchase any of the albums you see by clicking on the relevant link in the “Buy These Tunes” section of each discography page. There are lyrics for all the Black Sabbath studio albums – I will not be doing lyrics for the others.
But I’m not trying to cover all the solo projects and relevant bands, the site would be radically larger. I also cover information for selected solo bands and projects, such as the solo projects of all four main Black Sabbath members, and a couple of others that have been in the band over the years.
If it’s not listed here, then it’s not an “official, band sponsored album”. Please note that I do not make any attempt to catalog all the various bootlegs, and unofficial albums out there (there’s just too many of them). You can either pick a section by the list below, or via the menus at the top of the page. In this section of the web site, you can view information on all the official albums by Black Sabbath.
